Try to reinstall the OFW then try doing CFW again. Sounds like there is something wrong with the CFW you downloaded.

Restore and go back to OFW are two different thing, because when you restore is for delete all games,downloaded contents,etc. But when you go back to 3.55 (updating to the same version (3.55) via Safe Mode) is for revert the Jailbreak of the CFW so when you are in Safe Mode select the option "System Update"
Note: You have to put the 3.55 update in a storage media (pendrive,etc)
