I heard that using an FTP program on the PS3 using blackbox FTP or whatever + FileZilla is better than using Comgenie's Awesome File Manager.
Which one do you guys recommend?

Does using Blackbox FTP and FileZilla require the FileZilla server

Blackbox FTP server goes on the PS3 and Filezilla is a program for your computer. You use Filezilla to connect to Blackbox to change patches etc.
