If you are following Mathieulh’s Twitter, you will see he has been telling everyone that he has figured out the way to “unlock the extra spu which sony has disabled at factory” However, this has not been tested yet by Mathieulh as he mentioned that there are no more PS3 console left for him to test the “method” since there are high potential of brickness. Read more on Mathieulh’s tweets.
I just figured how to unlock the extra spu which sony has disabled at factory.
Upon startup, the syscon firmware will read the eeprom value located at 0x48C30 and will set the cell config ring accordingly.
That value is set to 0×06 on all consumer consoles which means 7 SPEs are actually enabled. Incrementing it should unlock the extra SPE.
I haven’t tested it yet though (I am not too keen on bricking) Also should you set some fancy value such as 0×00 or 0xFF you’d likely brick.
@mohnnad15 That means you can possibly unlock an extra SPE for your Linux fanciness (depends if your extra SPE is dead or not)
@mohnnad15 That, or brick, because i haven’t tested this yet. I don’t have another ps3 to kill here xD
btw by EEPROM I obviously mean Syscon’s EEPROM. You can read/write to that offset through the Update Manager.
SOMETHING I FOUND WHILE BROWSING THRU GOOGLE!!!IF YOUR FLAME PLEASE DON'T POST!!!!
