Alright, I'm gonna try and make this as easy as possible. This guide will cover everything from downloading, to transferring, to playing backups on your PS3.
Things you will need:
PS3 with 3.55 Kmeaw firmware
USB Flash drive or external hard drive
Room on your PS3 / external for backups
A computer
1. Downloading
First off, you're going to need jDownloader. It's a free program, just google it and you'll find it pretty easily. Once you have that, it's time to start finding your links. Navigate over to the "PS3 Game Downloads" section. This is where you're going to find pretty much every game released on the PS3. You can either look through the threads yourself, or use the Search This Forum button to try and quickly find your game. In this example, I'm searching for Gran Turismo.
You must login or register to view this content.
Note: Sometimes, vBulletin search will omit short or common words, sometimes everything in your search. Try searching God of War 3 -- it omits everything. In this case, I recommend searching the stickied threads for links.
Assuming the search actually searched for your terms, you should get some results. Now, some of the threads in the results won't actually have links to the game you searched. Somebody might have just requested that game in the thread somewhere, so it showed up in the list. I recommend trying to find threads with [MU] (Megaupload) or [FS] (Fileserve) links, as they are really easy and quick to download from. For example, I'm using links from SilentHunter's thread.
You must login or register to view this content.
Once the thread loads, Ctrl + F to find the game you want. After that, you'll see either a bunch of links for a game, or one link. If it's one link, it's usually a container or link protector of some sort. Just copy whatever you see and start up jDownloader. Hit the LinkGrabber tab after it updates, and click "Add URL(s)".
You must login or register to view this content.
If you're entering a protected link, like I am, it may prompt for an archive password, which you can find in the thread you got your link(s) from. Enter your links, and it should check them for you. If the link is to a .dlc file, download that, as it's a container for your links and will automatically add links for the game when done downloading. Press start when it adds your links and it should start downloading. When it's done, use WinRAR to extract the whole folder included to your desktop / downloads folder / anywhere that's easy for you. Now, on to transferring.
2. Transferring
Now that you've got your game downloaded, you're going to need to either transfer it to an external USB drive formatted to FAT32 or your PS3's internal drive. The first method I'm going to discuss is the easiest: just transferring games to your external USB drive.
First off, plug in your external USB drive if it's not already. When you open it in explorer, you're going to need to make a folder called "GAMES" on the root of the drive. This folder is where you're going to put your games. Then, it's as easy as dragging the folder you extracted from the RAR to the folder you just created on your hard drive.

Leave the folders names like they are when you extract them. Don't rename them to something like "GT5". Note: you will not be able to transfer files over 4 GB easily to an external drive because of the FAT32 file size limitation. You either need to split the files (there's tutorials on this forum) or FTP them to your internal (See below).
Transferring to the internal PS3 drive
Now, the easiest way to transfer something to your internal PS3 drive is by first transferring it to your external, booting up your backup manager, and pressing the O button to copy it to your PS3's hard drive. However, you can also FTP it, and this way is better for files over 4 GB. There's tutorials on how to FTP wirelessly and stuff, but I'm showing you how to do it by directly connecting a regular ethernet cable from your PS3 to your PC. Credit goes to damantyltd from psgroove for showing me how to do this.
I'm using Windows 7 for this, so it might be different for XP, but here's how to do it on 7. Go to Control Panel --> Network and Internet --> Network and Sharing Center --> Change adapter settings. When there, right click the Local Area Connection that you will be using and click properties. When that screen comes up, click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click properties. Fill in these settings:

When you do that, turn on your PS3 and go to Internet Settings, hit Custom, Wired Connection, Auto-Detect, and when you get to IP Settings, hit manual. Fill it out as follows:
IP Address 10.1.1.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Defualt Router 10.1.1.0
Primary DNS 10.1.1.0
Secondary DNS 10.1.1.10
Leave all the other settings the defaults, and if you haven't already, plug your PS3 in to your PC. If you don't have an FTP manager installed on your PS3, you have to do that. I recommend Blackb0x FTP manager,
You must login or register to view this content.. Download that, put the .pkg file on the root of a USB drive, go to "Install Package Files" on your PS3, and isntall it. Once you have that done, start up your FTP manager. You should see "IP: 10.1.1.2".
If you've done this correctly, you can now use an FTP program on your computer to connect to your PS3 and quickly transfer files to it. I recommend FileZilla, as it's free and fast. When you open FileZilla, all you need to do is type "10.1.1.2" in the IP Address field and hit connect. You don't have to put anything in the username / password fields. If done correctly, you should see a bunch of folders in the right window named beginning in "dev_". You're looking for "dev_hdd0".
You must login or register to view this content.
Double click the "dev_hdd0" folder. In here, you need to create another folder named "GAMES". After that, it's simple: just drag the folder from your computer into that folder. It should start the FTP process, and soon enough, be done. Congratulations, you FTP'd a game to your PS3.
3. Starting and Playing your Backups
Now, if you don't already have a backup manager, I recommend the newest MultiMAN. Here's my link to that:
You must login or register to view this content.. Install just the .pkg file named "multiMAN ver 1.14.00 MEGA [20110125_160000].pkg". Note: If it doesn't work, download this file:
You must login or register to view this content., install it, and run it once. After that, your backup manager should work and you can delete that program.
After you have a backup manager, start it up and you should see the games you transferred earlier. All you need to do now is start them and play! Press X to load a game, and if it asks you if you want to start without going back to XMB, click no. Now, if you have a disc in your console (Any disc, higher compatibility this way), launch your game by clicking the disc icon (should be the game you loaded in your backup manager). If not, you can launch the game by clicking /app_home/PS3_GAME/. If your game asks you to patch, you can do that, and play online.
If you need any more help, just ask.
Have Fun!
