Sony PS3 Consoles Face US Ban? LG v/s Sony Patent Fight Rages On

Ever thought of a situation where you no more get the Sony PlayStation 3 consoles in the US? Well, the story can be that way around if LG gets favorable verdict in a recent patent infringement suit filed against Sony products.

LG has filed a patent infringement suit against Sony Bravia televisions and PS3 consoles at the US International Trade Commission in Washington on February 4th. The complaints claim that Bravia High-definition televisions and PS3 consoles are infringing certain patents owned by LG.

According to the complaints, against the PS3 consoles and Blu-ray players, the patent infringement is about the way they handle ‘multiple data streams’ and their ‘system to reproduce data that is stored in a read-only device’.

The complaints filed with ITC demand a ban on the sales of the patent infringing products from Sony in the US. To get it around more than just a ban, LG has also filed civil suits in federal court in California. Here they are seeking cash compensation for unspecified damages.

However, the suits are seen as a retaliatory move from LG who was earlier sued for patent infringements by Sony. The game started when the Japanese consumer electronics giant has sued its Korean rival LG on Dec 28 citing patent violation by some of its mobile phone devices.

The complaint filed with ITC puts LG’s Lotus Elite, Neon, Remarq, Rumor 2 and Xenon as patent infringing devices. Possibly, since it’s just a tit for tat game, the companies are expected to work out the battle out-side court. Gamers, we don’t know if Sony PS3s will really get banned, but less chances it seems.
