yes it is possible
you can data transfer from any fw as long as the ps3 your transfering to is on the same fw version or higher, ie, 3.55 or 3.41 to 3.56
you cannot transfer to lower versions ie, 3.56 to 3.55 it will just tell you to update first

i forgot to say how:
just plug an ethernet cable into both ps3s joining them, then use the data transfer option on the ps3 system settings and away you go, it will transfer the data through ethernet cable from 1 ps3 to the other
