I just bought one just like that for $50. It depends in what way the disc drive is broken. On mine it just won't read discs so its fine for cfw. If the disc drive is disconnected though then it won't be able to update firmware

yes and No
yes you can play backups with a ps3 that can't read discs anymore
No because some games require any game disc in the drive to play the game

you don't need a disc player to get backups on to an external HDD just a internet connection and patience

You must login or register to view this content. And download a torrent.
Then extract it in Utorrent and install the app onto your TI Calculator and install it,
Boot up the PS3 running the Jailbreak and just like the JailBreak, install the new app (the new backup you downloaded from the link above) like FTP Server or any other app.

But don't forget to check which firmware it is on. Because if they recently got online with it , it is more than likely gonna be on 3.56

Some do, but most (And the ones I have :3) do not.
Is it possible to Jailbreak using a Soney Ericsson phone or a USB stick? Don't have one of those calculators
