The PS3 would never ask me to format the hard drive when I inserted it. I searched forum after forum and tried several different methods to fix this. Ultimately I decided to try using the PS3Jig v1.00 downgrade method (even though i was not downgrading) with my PSP and it worked. The HD was not PS3 formatted before I tried this and it somehow formated and installed the 3.55 OFW from my usb stick. I hope this helps.
