sorry didnt read the last part of it but i dont think it transfers the firmware? just the patches and savedata etc i think if it transfered the firmware it would take hella long.... no im 99% confident you can do this without transfering firmware

No.. it doesn't transfer the firmware at all, only gamesaves, game data etc...

only thing is you cant transfer from 3.60 to 3.55 or any cfw because it says system update required before transfer starts

so if i had map packs installed to the 1st ps3 and i transfered the data to the new ps3 (which has the earliest fw)... would it transfer the map packs as well?

you would keep map packs as long as you deactivate system youre transfering from (account management on psn), but the point is you can not transfer from a later fw to an earlier fw as just as transfer is about to start it tells you a system update is needed :\
