Yes, 3.55 > 3.50

I would recomend updating to official 3.55 and if you want you can go to a Custom Firmware.

Don't update using a internet connection

Yes download the 3.55 FW on your computer. Here is a link - You must login or register to view this content.
Then put that file on a USB Stick in the correct folder. Correct folder is (root of USB)/PS3/UPDATE/(then fw file here, should be named "PS3UPDAT.PUP"). Anything in capitals HAS to be in capitals. Then stick the USB stick in your PS3, go to firmware update and choose from storage. Follow on screen instructions. And yes this should be in the questions section. Also you could have easily googled it.

you can update from any fimware to the next one up

eg 3.50 to 3.55

if you want to go CFW update via storage media then use the 3.60 debug spoof i believe it enables psn acess with fuk psn or charles
