Ok so im on 3.55 now & im wondering if there is any other way (other than data transfer and backing up) to setup my ps3 so i can switch patches when i update?

There is no conventional way, but there is a way to change your 3.55 HDD, and then upgrading while still having some options to use..
I doubt you would want to upgrade you 3.55 though :/
