Sony is readying to launch a full-blown iTunes rival on PS3 later today at the IFA technology expo in Berlin.

That's according to a report in the Financial Times, which says that Sony is in talks with a number of major record labels over content.

The subscription-based music and video service will reportedly replace the Sony Connect music store that closed its virtual doors back in 2008 - and is tipped to go live early next year.

The FT claims that the Sony Music service will launch on the PlayStation 3 - which will become its central 'hub'. It will also reportedly combine compatibility with PSP Sony Walkman, Vaio computers, Bravia TVs along with Sony Ericsson mobile handsets.

We'll be keeping one eye on Sony's IFA conference and one eye on Apple's London shindig. Luckily, we've got enough eyes.

I see pros and cons to this, meaning why would I buy a song on Itunes <---lets face it it's more practical... and then buy it on PSN just to have it available on PS3 too when I could put it in a USB drive and transfer it over. I hope it works out for SONY but I wouldn't hold my breathe unless there are advantages of doing this such as points or rewards I don't think this will be a big hit with people, just my 2 cents.

well its a good idea from sony, they want a machine that does everything, with this they are one step closer plus if they can take 10 percent away from itunes they will be doing well

Hm this seems like a good idea, it would be especially great if the subscription cost were included in Playstation Plus subscription, then it'd be great.

We'll see if this is true. Well, if Sony would start with online Movie Streams, that would be interesting for me.

I'm not sure but you might be thinking of vidzone there because Sony made a deal with EMI for something like 25,000 new videos for vidzone

Well isn't that the tag of the PS3? "It only does everything"

I sorta hope this does work, but then again I really won't have any use for it. Sorta like the Digital Comic store, I only go there to find free comics and read them then delete them off my PSP.

But Im glad Sony is giving people a ton of new things from the PS3. Now if they let us use our PS3s like a DVR that they planned a few years back then I'll get the offical papers to adopt my PS3 as part of my family.
