1. In the campaign, you should always hold the right trigger button to reach new areas as quickly as you can. It is very important to get to the enemy quickly, especially in escort and protect missions.
2. On the other hand, in dogfights, holding the left trigger button gives you the best maneuverability, so you can get behind enemy planes and fire away.
3. Learn to use both your missiles and the cannon. Missiles take a minute to reach enemy planes, so you should go ahead and attempt to line up cannon fire to hit them while you wait, especially if you know they'll take several missiles to go down.
4. If your opponent is a helicopter or ground unit that only takes one missile to destroy, keep things moving by switching targets to another enemy just after you shoot the missile.
5. Whether you should use Assistance ON or OFF is mostly just about your preference. However, several actions (like shooting radar-guided missiles or your cannon) are more easily done with Assistance ON. OFF mode gives you more maneuverability in dogfights at the expense of a chance of stalling.
Pull up from a stall by holding the right trigger button and getting the nose horizontal.
6. Go ahead and use the recommended plane and weapons layout for each campaign mission the first time through. In future playthroughs, you may have better options, but you're unlikely to for now.
