Post: Sony could remotely disable jailbroken PS3s

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); With PS3 open territory for hackers and pirates, many have been wondering what action Sony will take to secure its system. The platform-destroying piracy rampant on PSP makes it clear exactly how much is at stake. To date, Sony's response to the jailbreak has been limited to mandatory firmware updates and revoking PSN access to those that refuse to use official system software.

However, a report by Digital Foundry claims that Sony can take far more drastic measures. Even if you've never signed up for a PSN account, your console will communicate with Sony servers every time it boots up. That initial load process is used to upload error logs, download updates to the "What's New" module, and a list of recently-run applications, including any unauthorized backup manager software.

Sony has yet to ban any consoles for taking advantage of the jailbreak, but the terms and conditions of the PlayStation Network make it clear that Sony has the authority to carry them out. Thanks to the system's constant self-reporting feature, "the company even has the means to irrevocably disable your console should it so wish," rendering affected PS3 consoles unusable, online and off. But will Sony ever use such a drastic measure? And if so, how will the hacker scene retaliate?

Now that is some complete BULLSHIT! contact to Sonys servers without internet connection thats complete load of lies and scare tactics the, Whats New menu is only available when signed in with PSN and its able to download updates without an internet connection ROFL!

If sony go with a mass banning of either PSN accounts or Console bans expect a war sony i will buy 5 more and hack the SHIAT! out of them

You cant stop whats unstoppable, Millions of hackers working on gaining access to things you dont want us to have/see only a matter of time before your in the muck again Sony, Try it expect a war and see you soon

First of all you must understand that the key that was released IS the ps3. There's no changing it, ever, therefore the system will ALWAYS be open to exploitation now. That's just the sad truth. They must except this.

Secondly, they cannot ban your system from even booting up IF YOU ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. I have 2 machines and the one has never been connected to the internet/psn nor ever will be. All the updates I have done with that machine have been via storage device. Quit spreading lies that they can still ban you even if you aren't logged in. That's just asinine!

Thirdly, who cares? Everyone knows the risks of running exploits on the system and if for some reason a ban were to occur, (and the only way this could happen is through direct means of network communication from Sony's server to your machine) then "tough titty said the kitty" but all the free milk's still good. You cut your losses, buy another system, if so choose, and go back to normal PS3 activities. :FU:

If you have never connected your PS3 to the internet, then no they can't ban you.

However even if you never sign in but still have your PS3 connected to the internet they can ban you. Signing off won't protect you.
