Sony has cleverly implemented new coding into firmware 3.56 that can allow them to remotely detect a system that is running homebrew or a custom firmware, which can lead to bans.
Firmware 3.56 is proving to be a valuable update for Sony. Scattered about message boards and forums, it is being said that Sony’s latest firmware has a new feature implemented within that will allow Sony to remotely run code on PS3 consoles as they connect to PSN. What this entails can be anything Sony want to be done, so it can check for custom firmware or homebrew. By doing so, Sony can verify systems and even edit code without the need for future firmware updates. This will make it easier for Sony to track homebrew and custom firmware users that go online and possibly lead to bans, which has been heavily implied.
Sony has yet to activate these features but the possibility to do so is there.
