Over the last few days as expected a teaser website has surfaced, obviously building up to a big launch of some sort, but is it Call of Duty?
The story starts last Friday on the 25th February, when numerous widely-known gaming websites were sent fake dog tags, all “advertising”
You must login or register to view this content.. And as expected, this led to established gaming sites like Kotaku & IGN posting news articles about it. Some said it was legitimately a MW3 teaser. Some said it was a hoax. But what I can’t get my head around is the theory that another large gaming publisher is behind it, a publisher like EA who could easily afford all of this. Now whilst yes it’s a possibility, I really doubt that they would go out of their way to advertise MW3. Why? It’s common sense from a marketer’s standpoint, all EA would be doing is building up hype for a rival game, which obviously for EA make very bad business sense- unless it is advertising Respawn’s new game.
It would make perfect sense. The court case between ex-Infinity Ward heads Vince Zampella & Jason West and Activision has been going on for a while, the most recent claim coming from Activision’s camp claiming that VZ & JW purposefully sabotaged MW2, working alongside EA the whole time. As much as I doubt this(despite MW2′s flaws) it does mean that Activision has a leg to stand on, meaning that the trial will probably drag on for a few years. But what VZ & JW are claiming is that they own the rights to the “Modern Warfare” brand, so until the trial is over they can pretty much use that name to their own advantage- whether that be advertising their own game using stuff from MW2 or maybe even naming their own game Modern Warfare 3.
Can you imagine that? On the very day that Activision’s game expectedly ships out so does Respawn’s, both with exactly the same title, leaving fans with a choice between money-hungry Activision & their relatively unheard of devs, or EA & the tried-and-proven devs over at Respawn Entertainment. What a story that would be. By that I mean a success story, not only for us gamers who are sick of Activision’s appalling pricing of DLC but also for Vince & Jason, who have quite clearly been screwed over by Activision from the very start.
I’m not going to bother exploring other possibilities because to me the above theory makes perfect sense, and it would be a win/win situation for us gamers. So yeah, I’m hoping it’s true as much as I’m believing it, and let’s hope I’m not getting carried away dreaming about how things could be.
So what do you think? Am I indeed getting carried away or is it a real possibility? Feel free to leave a comment below.
