"What you see on Sunday, you see in the game," Madden NFL 10's producer, Phil Frazier, told me when I got my first glimpse of the game. That mantra doesn't wait until you're in-game either, as everything. from the loading screens (which show a series of down markers counting down from 4th to 1st), to the title screen (which shows first-row fans holding signs that say "Press" and "Start"), to the the run-up to kickoff give you the feeling of "being there." Once you're ready for the first snap, you'll see retro play-call menus and stat banners that show how close you are to breaking a record -- and that make a big deal of it when you do make NFL history.
But the most important push toward "what you see on Sunday" is Madden's new "Pro-Tak" animation system. In previous versions of Madden you'd get a maximum of one offensive and two defensive players in "gang tackles." But the new system allows as many as nine to get involved in a takedown. And if running backs aren't making forward progress, the zebras will blow the whistle to call the play dead (just like what you'd see on Sunday). What this ultimately means is that the "trucking" rating will make a huge difference in plowing a few extra feet. But that tactic won't work with just any player. Lightweight Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker will go down from a strong breeze, while workhorses like New York Giants tailback Brandon Jacobs can carry defenders until they get help.

Another advantage of Pro-Tak is that, while it creates significantly better pockets, it also makes the defensive line play -- finally -- fun. You can steer toward the QB en route to a sack, or at least a hurry, if you outmaneuver an offensive lineman. Other defensive tweaks mean you can use defensive assist to put your defender in an optimal spot, and you can even use your hit stick to push a pile over.

As for teensier touches, I'm thrilled that costume combinations aren't dictated by some no-fun League statute; now you can match any helmet with any jersey with any pads. It's finally up to you, Joe Gamer; the way it should've been for the past 25 versions. Plus, a QB can throw when his legs are wrapped up. Major online details are still forthcoming, but you can definitely expect online co-op gameplay when the game ships this summer.
