Will the PlayStation Network be back up within the time-frame originally outlined by Sony?

PSN has been offline since 20 April in the wake of a hacking scandal that has seen 77 million accounts breached by a hacker.

Sony said via a blog post back on 28 April that it expected some services to resume by 4 May. It reiterated that belief on Sunday 1 May when it listed online gameplay among the features set to return this week.

Today marks two weeks of PSN down time, with Sony promising incentives for users when it is reactivated. There's no indication as yet whether yesterday's revelation of 25 million further SOE accounts being hacked has caused any kind of delay to the relaunch of PSN.

Sony is working on a new update - 3.60 according to the Japanese PlayStation blog - that will require all users to change their password when the PSN is restored.

Sony prepping new Firmware update for PSN return?

Rumours suggest that Sony is poised to release a new Firmware update for the PlayStation 3, designed to address some of the security issues that have plagued PS3 and PSN since the online service was hacked last month.

According to the Official Japanese PlayStation Blog via Google Translate Sony will release the update prior to the reactivation of the network, users will also be prompted to change their password once they sign in to PSN

Late last month someone claiming to be an employee of Sony Computer Entertainment said PSN could make its return with a number of heavily requested user features such as cross-game chat.
