Post: Thoughts on the PSN Outage

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Before I post this, I just want to say this is not a rant. While I am as pissed off as the next guy at Sony's actions, I want to give a take on the situation as a whole in the most unbiased way possible. So, this has no new information about the outage, check this section, and when new info comes out, you'll get 50 new rep boosters trying to post the info, so I won't be posting any "new" information.

Anyways, without further ado, here is my take on the matter. When it first started, people were probably a bit annoyed. But, it was seen as just another outage, and it was expected to be back within a few hours, a day at the most. Well, the long weekend came and went, and it was still not back online. In fact, bad news came, and we were notified that our credit card info may be at risk.

Here is where things start to change. The government and media get involved, and a whole lot of bad press came on Sony. This is what caused them to then start updating the situation fairly often, or at least more often than before. This is when things started to happen on Sony's side. They sent senators and congressmen letters, they held a news conference, which we all know went oh so well for them.

Well, the week that PSN was supposed to be back online came and went without PSN turning back on. But will Sony be as hardworking and rushed as they were to give us more info this time? I don't think so. And that is what I want to talk about.

Sony responded quickly and efficiently the time they let bad news out because they got bad press. However, I haven't heard of or seen as much bad press come from this, what I will call a lie on their part. They've lied throughout this entire time, and, people like us, gamers, are starting to just say "Oh, what a surprise, Sony lied again." And then we move on. What is the problem with this kind of attitude? We aren't holding Sony up to the high standard we used to. We are becoming satisfied with being lied to.

I think, that in order to get some sort of action from Sony, what we, as a community need to do, is cause more noise about this matter. Sony can't expect us to just be as complacent as we are currently being. We need to be constantly emailing them, talking to larger members of the community such as Machinima and NGT (yes, I don't like them, but they do have a decent influence on the community) and try to get them to put out bad press about this. The ultimate goal would be to get large newspapers to give Sony bad press, but that may be unattainable.

I truly think this is the only way to get a big company like Sony to react to a situation like this. Why? It's simple: companies only care about their profit and stock prices. Since most PS3 owners are young and not too influential in the stock market or in the public's confidence in Sony, they aren't too hard pressed to respond to this situation as quickly as they were when governments and the media was getting involved. If word starts to get out about Sony's failure to meet their timeline, and their poor network security, they will start acting on it. I think the only way for us as a community to get answers and results from a company like Sony is to cause noise.

Now, don't take this the wrong way. Don't go back into the Playstation Section and post up a thousand posts about how dissatisfied you are with the PSN being down. No one wants spam. Email Sony, maybe contact Machinima directors, or NGT, or even newspapers, and try to get them to cover this. We are 500,000 strong at NGU, and, even though some of us may be young, if we stand together, and take action together, we can bring this into the spotlight as effectively as the government did, and get quick responses at the very least from Sony. We deserve answers from Sony, and I truly believe this is the only way to get them.

If you read all of this, congratulations. That's a lot to read. What do you think about this? What are your opinions on why Sony is responding so poorly to this very big event in their company? And how do you think we can get them to give us better answers and responses?

The TL; DNR Version

Sony will not act quickly about this situation until we let the world know how poorly they are handling the situation, so get out there and tell anyone who has a big influence on the gaming community and the rest of the world about this.

good post man. i think you are right about this. We the gamers need to take action instead of letting Sony get away with every little lie they tell us.
