(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Hey just wondering if its worth fixing my old 4 usb port, backwards compatible ps3. The ps3's on 3.41 i believe or maybe lower too.

It died after yellow light of death and i've tried fixing it in many different ways from washers to blowdryers. So i figured my next pay check will be towards the ps3, buying a heatgun, thermal paste, a 500GB hd.

I plan to mod it but what do you guys think? Is it worth the trouble?

How much would you be willing to pay for a modded backwards compatible ps3 with 4 usb ports :p?

Do a barrel roll!
I would first just buy the heatgun and thermal paste. and if it works then I would buy a 500gb hdd. I also have a 80gb bc ps3 that I recently fixed. but its up to date on the firmware.

depends on how much that would run you if it cost alot i would just use the money to buy a 60gb

a 60 has hardware ps2 bc
a 80 is only emulated limited compatibility

but if it didnt cost alot id go for it it would be something to do anyways

Honestly, in my professional opinion. Just send it off to be "reballed" with lead solder and not the lead-free solder (which Sony uses). This will prevent many serious problems from happening within the next few years. I also recommend using a newer thermal paste. I always use the diamond based thermal paste as it is same price and more effective than Artic Silver 5. I use it on all my repairs.

So you are looking at about $90 for reball, $10 for thermal paste, and possibly $75 for your HDD. It would be wise to add about $22 for a 19 blade OEM fan as well. Then your machine will be better than most of the newer consoles. I'd know as I've done a few systems that way already Smile

Also, I have videos in my repair/upgrade guide if you are looking to do some mods to the console. The link to it is in my signature Smile
