A PS3-exclusive party, Zipper Interactive, the creators of the SOCOM series as well as the first-person shooter MAG, may be in the process of being shut down by Sony, according to sources of Kotaku.
However this cannot be confirmed, due to rumor/speculations and their policy, they've refused to comment on the matter when news reporters for Kotaku and other sources asked.
The word on the street for a few days now is that Zipper was going to be cut off from Sony's first-party development, thus layoffs resulting a full studio shutdown, stopping the creation of any further titles.
Zipper Interactive has been apart of videogame development and in business since approximately 1996, with favored games such as Mechwarrior 3 and Crimson Skies, which brought the company it's big name, which also brought Sony to buy the name in 2006 to focus on it's consoles. The studio's confirmed last game was a third-person shooter called United 13 made for the Playstation Vita.
During the Playstation 2 era, Zipper Interactive was one of Sony's biggest assets, making games that were a favorite to all. However, lately they haven't been doing the best, MAG wasn't even close to being a successful title (which they thought it would be due to how big fights would be), and of course the newest PS3 title, SOCOM 4, which was released during the "great" Playstation Network downtime.
Although this information isn't exactly official, it's still possible Zipper may be receiving quite a few layoffs, and due to the numbers estimated, could end up being a full studio shutdown.
Information will be gathered in due time, we just need to wait for Sony to comment on the matter.
That kind of sucks to see a company go down. Only Socom games I had played were the 1st one, the PSP version, and the Ps3 one, not 4. Out of all, the 1st one was my fave. Kept me and my brothers on it.
I dont think it was a good game tbh, not a real loss to the world of gaming
any game company closing down is a loss, if there isnt others who make game how can it ever progress without the opinion on how it should be done by others it creates creativity and makes games better as a whole to have them as a company making games :dumb: why would you applaud them not being around
