I just purchased a fat 40Gb model CECHG01 PS3 off Kijiji. Long story short; it wont update and only gives me error codes

According to system information I'm on Version 2.53.

When I try to update via XMB I get 8002F147. So a bit of searching the web many mentioned try updating it via the recovery menu, and from there I get 8002F2C5 and the console tries to restart. Tried reformatting the hard using the full format option in the XMB, but that did not help at all

Tried searching both on here and Google but the error seems to occur to those who have installed 3.56v1, but I'm on 2.53

I'm not trying to install any Custom firmware at the moment but rather trying to restore it's update functionality.

4.31 directly from the US Sony site. Also tried 2.6 and (something 'in-between' 3.7 acquired from eurasia.nu and ps3hax.net, and 3.55 from a game disc.
