So ive been asked this question a few times from friends who have bought a ps3 from Japan or Asia, if you are a person that has you would have the same problem of O being X & X being O. I know confusing if you had been using the NA/Europe.
It is not possible!! when dealing with the PS3's main XMB and whatnot, and I'm definitely sure that you can't change them for games since they are programmed into the actual software. Confirm and Cancel are always mapped either to O and X or X and O respectively depending on region.
The Japanese have the mindset of a circle representing "truth" and "affirmation". Meanwhile, an X represents "wrong" or "denial". Because of this, their game menus use O for Yes and X for No.
The NA/EU regions on the other hand are based on how one can instinctively press a button. Since fingers naturally rest in a Square/X formation, X would be easier to press than O, hence it being confirmation while circle (being harder to reach with the thumb) representing cancellation.
Some obscure games released in NA/EU do keep the original Japanese menu navigation controls the same though, which tends to confuse gamers on both ends of the spectrum.
