When you press the shut off switch or unplug the system it corrupts your database!
However it is quite RARE to have a switch on the back of your ps3 system because of all the system corruptions that caused it.

The only ways i have fixed this issue is by the following!

1. Signing off and signing back on

2. Using the safety mechanism built in [aka the secret menu]

3. Pulling the plug [or switch] ps- i do realize this caused the problem but it fixed it for me

4. If its a very serious case contact sony by going to www.sony.com

This is what i found that fixed my system and i hope this resolved your issues!

Most of the time if none of those work its the ps3 servers and you have to wait it out.

How wierd that this glitch is common for me but ill try that

& Or you can try setting your PS3's connecton setting's DNS to Google's 8.8.8.8 DNS. That might load-up your friends list quicker.
