(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); September 3,2008 - Yesterday, we reported on a Japanese announcement that documented the upcoming PS3-specific Bluetooth Headset that Sony had in the works. Today, SCEA sent out an official press release confirming the device's release in the US and providing additional details about what could be a very promising peripheral.

The headset will hit store shelves starting October 14th. It will initially be available bundled with SOCOM: Confrontation for $59.99 and will afterwards be sold on its own for $49.99. The headset "leverages superior voice technology and other advanced features to enhance voice chat during intense online multiplayer gaming."

The press release goes on to note that the headset is "compact, sleek, and ergonomic, fitting comfortably on each ear and featuring an easily accessible mute button." Although the device was designed with the PS3 in mind, gamers will be able to use it in conjunction with other Bluetooth compatible devices as well, like cell phones. The Bluetooth Headset will be complimented by a PS3 firmware update planned for this fall that will enable the peripheral's High-Quality mode. According to the release, this mode will work in conjunction with the Headset's "dual-microphone design" to deliver voice quality formally unavailable in Bluetooth devices.

HQ mode will also allow PS3 users to take advantage of a number of other special features, like precise voice command options, voice animation (characters mimic your voice in-game) and proximity chat. Lastly, the headset will come with a charging cradle and -- when paired with the PS3 -- uses an on-screen indicator to display battery level, connection status and speaker volume.
