It’s a 3 – 5 year planning, R&Awesome face, prototyping, providing developers with the hardware, taking their feedback, improving quality and repeating the cycle.

Things like USB ports, Audio ports, RAM, Heatsink, PSU and more can be changed with a year or less of leadtime (as it was evident in PS3). Things like motherboard, CPU, GPU cannot be changed last minute.

It’s one of the reasons that we believe both Microsoft and Sony went for AMD’s chips i.e. they were able to dedicate time to the two companies and ensure everything is done on time with the best results.

Now looking at the technology provided 3 or so years ago, PS4 and next Xbox are powerhouse.

Yes, to current standard it may not be the best but it’s still not as bad as people portray it to be.

They are in a situation where either they charge a lot for a yearly hardware, or they charge less than their last $599 mistake that lead to a very slow start.

To top that, no one wants a delay or hardware shortage.

They’re already planning to mass produce in the next few months; hell, we don’t even have a final prototype for PS4!

So with that said, more RAM is one thing that can be added to the hardware with less sacrifice.

That and developers are completely fine with the CPU/GPU and RAM was the only thing they were constantly complaining about.

Every developer is very surprised with the inclusion of 8GB GDDR5 RAM as it’ll cost an arm and a leg since it’s not a standard.

Most definitely Sony came up with the great deal with the manufacturers and somehow kept the cost low.

In simple terms, it’s the same reason why Boeing just can’t replace the batteries for Dreamliner last minute.

They’re losing money and there is crazy delay in the delivery of the air crafts and they’re trying to find a solution rather than replacing the hardware.
