One huge caveat/punishment Ubisoft implemented is when you do turn off the Online Option, all your skills accumulated are reset to zero. You read that right. They all get reset to zero. All the online-specific skills reset to zero as punishment for not wanting to play online, something which is entirely disappointing. Either you keep getting invaded, or you get punished for wanting to play sometimes and not other times with the online mode.

I've heard in a video from ubisoft that the more you invade others the more likely your'll be invaded and the less you act on others invading you the less likely you'll be invaded too. Hopefully that sorts itself out fast, or we find out more details on it soon!

or it could be for the people who gain all the skills then go offline so they dont get messed around with, then decide to go and hunt newbs down and ruin their experience.

i look forward to people invading me though and ill me invading others, maybe not to steal from them but to spook them haha

a big F off from me ubisoft, they can't dictate or force people going offline, it's peoples choice, not theirs.

What if you unplug your router then play offline?

You won't be able to connect to the servers and I doubt be able to rank up them skills or do the things that rank it up?
