Game blog Joystiq has the scoop on a potential change to the 360. According to "Documentation obtained by Joystiq – and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources," The Xbox 360 will soon feature USB storage as an option. Reportedly, a software update supposedly scheduled for spring 2010 will allow users to stick a USB drive in their 360 and store Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device, as well as allowing you to install games. You'll also apparently be able to run disc games off the USB, as long as the disc is in the tray for legitimizing purposes.
The catch (there's always a catch, eh?) is that formating a USB device for use with the 360 will apparently allow you to use only up to 16 GB, no matter how large your USB device. So it'll be useful, but it probably won't replace your harddrive (unless you have one of those tiny 360 harddrives that shipped with the unit a long, long time ago.) It looks like the simultaneous USB limit will be two 16 GB drives, meaning you can beef up your storage by 32 GB -- not bad but not perfect.
This all adds up to a probable end to the 360 Memory Unit, and thus a happy day for anyone who owns a hard-drive-less 360 Arcade model, as well as a legit use for all the thumb drives that are floating around the gaming world these days. A quick check on Amazon reveals that 16 GB USB drives sell for less than $30.
Oh, and for you PlayStation 3 fanboys: You might not even know this, but the PS3 has always supported USB drives.
I bought a 360 when they first came out, and opted for the 10 GB harddrive. This is because I'm dumb. It forces me to delete game demos and videos constantly, and be ever vigilant as to what I store on my drive. I've never bought a bigger drive because I'm unsatisfied as to Microsoft's pricing policy (It's $129 for 120 GB 360 drive, where a terabyte HD for a PC is sub-$100.) so I'm happy. What about you? Are you looking forward to using a 360 USB drive?
