Im pretty sure when you make your Xbox Live account, it asks you if you want to be a Silver Account User, or Upgrade to a Gold account. If you pick Silver, you should be taken to a screen saying you have been given a Free 1 Month Gold Trail.
Or you can buy a membership from a shop and enter the code on your Xbox. You can also buy the codes Directly from your xbox aswell.

Welcome to xbox to get 1month free gold trial, all you have to do is sign up for xbox live and add everything required, then it will come to a screen saying sign up for gold or something, click no thanks. An option comes up saying you are liable to 1 month free gold. ENJOY!

When making an account itll ask you to stay silver, agree, then itll say add payment info now/later, opt for later, then itll pop up saying you qualify for a one month free trial
