Left 4 Dead 2 Survivors
Coach was a high-school football instructor for a well playing team, but he suffered a nasty knee injury. Ironically, he's now a health teacher pushing 40 years old, but he's gone to seed since his collegiate glory days. The zombie apocalypse makes him wish he'd watched his own fitness more closely. Faliszek says Coach has "a great hatred for a few of the zombies; the Witch in particular" but naturally, he wouldn't explain why. He appears to be Bill's replacement. Coach is voiced by Chad L. Coleman.
Ellis
Most people would be scared witless by the zombie outbreak. Not Ellis—he's 21 and indestructible, so there was no way he was getting infected. The Savannah native respects his mother, loves his job and enjoys the simple pleasures in life. A little cocky, it remains to be seen if the end of the world will show him fear for the first time. Ellis is voiced by Eric Ladin.
Nick
Nick is a gambler and a conman in a slick, expensive suit, and so takes the Louis role as the "business man" of the group. Nick joined the other three in their quest to find salvation but is unsure about whether or not he can trust them, often comparing them to The Three Stooges. Still trying to figure out the best "angle" to get from the recent zombie apocalypse, as the time goes by, he starts to value his Survivor compatriots. Nick is voiced by Hugh Dillon.
Rochelle
Rochelle is 26-years-old and comes from Cleveland. She likes to communicate with the world and therefore became an associate producer in journalism. She was recently promoted and was sent to Savannah, the location of the first campaign, to produce a story on the odd occurrences that were happening. Rochelle is voiced by Rochelle Aytes.

Left 4 Dead 2 The Infected
AI Controlled Infected/Unplayable Infected
Common Infected
Common Infected are the most commonly-faced enemy, as well as the easiest to defeat. They are exclusively AI-controlled and fairly weak. Their strength lies in their tendency to attack in large groups of up to several dozen, known as hordes. While they seem capable of ignoring pain, they can still be killed easily. They are capable of climbing ladders and scaling objects, as well as breaking down weak walls. This type of Infected are attracted by flashlights, loud noises such as car alarms, or by Boomer bile.
Uncommon Infected
The Uncommon Common, or the Uncommon Infected have the same general weaknesses and health as most Common Infected, but there are a few differences that can affect how they're dealt with. Valve has hinted that there will be a different variety of Uncommon Common in each of the campaigns. A total of six Uncommon Infected are planned.Five have so far been revealed:
The Hazmat-suited Infected
The Hazmat-suited Infected appear exclusively in the Left 4 Dead 2 campaign, The Parish. Players will occasionally come across Common Infected wearing a Hazmat Suit, which was likely being worn prior to the person being infected. It has also been said that when they're killed they drop a bile bomb.
Though not as numerous as normal Common Infected, they share the same health, abilities and weaknesses. However, due to their Hazmat Suits, they are immune to fire in all forms. This includes:
* Incendiary Ammo (this type of ammo does kill them but not by setting them on fire)
* Static Fire (e.g. Burning barrels)
* Gas Canisters
* Molotov Cocktails
According to Chet, there is going to be an area that is "literally filled with them".
Mud Men
The Mud Men will appear in the campaign Swamp Fever They are similar to the Common Infected in most ways, except that they are covered in
Effects of the Mudmen's attack.
mud and use this as camouflage. They sprint on all fours. However, if it is shoved, it will go back on to two feet, the same way the Hunter does. They also run even faster than regular Infected. This makes them particularly harder and annoying to kill, especially when traversing through water as they can run below water as their own ground, while Survivors are slowed when inside the water.
When a Mud Man hits you, your screen is partially covered in little mud; the more it hits you, more mud covers your screen. The reason why they walk on all fours could be that it's hard to get around in the mud using just their legs, so to help them traverse, they adapted by using all four limbs to move. Or it could be an Infected half way turned into a Hunter.
Riot Infected
Chet Faliszek stated in an e-mail that "The Parish" would gain another Uncommon Infected, the Riot Infected. While human, they were members of a private security firm, which was hired by CEDA to protect civilians; in layman's terms, they were "Rent-A-Riot-Cops." However, they were Infected while wearing their gear, and their Kevlar armor gives them immunity to bullets from the front (but possibly not from behind.). Chet has stated, however, that they will not be immune to fire (which is strange since, like the Hazmat-Suited infected, they are covered head to toe in what is technicaly fire proof clothing, and some would argue that their armour would really be more effective against fire than the suit worn by the Hazmat,) melee weapons, or explosives. When they die, they may drop a Tonfa.
Clown Infected
A once laughable, lovable comedian, the Clown Infected is now a victim of the spreading infection. They wander around the Dark Carnival campaign and when they spot Survivors they will charge, calling other Infected in with their noisy, squeaky shoes for an attack. This Uncommon common Infected may be based on the same ideas as the Screamer, but the horde it summons is not as large as a regular one. According to a list of Left 4 Dead 2 achievements, the Survivors can 'honk its nose,' although how this is done is unknown, but it is likely accomplished by bashing its face with a blunt weapon.
Construction Infected
When this unfortunate demolition crew receives orders to tear down an old sugar mill, they get infected instead. They populate the Hard Rain campaign, and are seen wearing ear protection, hardhats, and a reflective vest. They are not drawn to pipe-bombs or certain crescendo events, as well as being immune to head shots. Also, it appears they can take considerably more damage than other common infected.
The Witch
The Witch generally only appears a few times per campaign, and is passive unless provoked by flashlights, gunfire, or Survivors in close proximity. She is very powerful, and is capable of incapacitating/killing players with a single attack, as well as sustaining much damage before dying. Luckily, many hints are given to let Survivors know when a Witch is nearby. The Witch cries loudly, which Survivors will mention they hear, and dramatic music will play. While the Witch can be killed, it is best to avoid startling her unless absolutely necessary and remember to turn your flashlight off. The Witch is very rarely found in small rooms and normally stays off the main route but has been found in front of safe rooms, doorways and in the middle of streets. Once a Witch has killed a Survivor she will retreat out the area and completely disappear. If a Witch must be killed then you have one of two options:
1. Sneak up on the Witch and attempt to cr0wn it with the Auto Shotgun. (If the initial head shot connects but does not kill, only one or two more shots should kill it.)
2. Have one player move far back, as far away from the Witch as possible. The Witch will target the player that disturbed it, meaning it will attack the farther away player providing he shot or shined a flash light on it. This will allow the other players to shoot the Witch as it is running to the farther away player. When using this method watch for Special Infected as they may ruin the plan or even kill the team if they attack at the right moment.
The Wandering Witch
The Wandering Witch is a term used for the Witch in Left 4 Dead 2 during daylight time only, the wandering Witch acts almost the same as the original Witch but rather than just sitting and waiting for the Survivors to come to her, she is able to wander around the map and even surprise one from behind. Apparently she is still zoned out like original Witch, but she cries less.
The wandering Witch is harder to avoid, leaving the new Survivors in a situation where they must kill her to get past. Apparently, she's able to "sing" instead of cry, when the sun goes down, it is assumed that the wandering Witch will act like the original Witch, sitting and sobbing, waiting for Survivors.
Controllable Infected
The Boomer
The Boomer is an Infected that vomits a special bile at Survivors, which temporarily blinds them and draws Common Infected to them. At a distance the Boomer is little threat, since he is extremely slow and weak. However, if within range he can vomit on Survivors, attracting the Horde. When he dies, he explodes and covers any Survivors who are close enough in his bile. If a Boomer is killed, nearby Survivors will additionally be blinded, and will stumble backwards. Boomers can be anticipated because of the gurgling noise they make. In Left 4 Dead 2 there is also a female Boomer, although it is not yet revealed if it will have any effect on gameplay.
The Charger
The Charger is a new Special Infected in Left 4 Dead 2. The Charger runs forward and knocks down Survivors in its way, running after the last Survivor and grabbing them. Once a Survivor is in its grasp, it continues sprinting untill it approaches a wall or over hard surface and starts slamming them into the ground until an ally frees them. Despite the fact that the Charger is almost the size of the Tank, it does not have as much health, but it still has more than the Hunter. The Charger has much in common with the Tank. Many people theorize that the Charger is actually halfway mutated into a Tank. Even though the Charger isn't as strong as a Tank it can do a large amount of damage.
The Hunter
The Hunter is similar to the fast zombies from Half-Life 2, although they are not as mutated on the outside. The Hunter is extremely quick and agile, capable of quickly scaling walls. Additionally, he can pounce and pin down Survivors, clawing at their abdomen until either the victim is dead, or the Hunter has been knocked off by another Survivor. They are not the most physically adept Infected, having relatively low health, and thus it doesn't take very much to kill them. When the Hunter crouches down in preparation to pounce, it growls, giving it away to any nearby Survivors. However, whilst standing it makes no noise. The Hunter is the only Special Infected that can remain absolutely silent.
The Jockey
The Jockey is a new Special Infected that will be appearing in Left 4 Dead 2. It is a smaller, hunched back Infected that attacks Survivors by clinging to them from behind and literally riding the Survivor while attacking them. He can also shift his weight around and cause the Survivor to stumble in his desired direction giving this Special Infected a type of control over the Survivor. It could be a reference to the headcrab in the Half-Life series. The Jockey seems to have a spinal disease, similar to Kyphosis.
The Smoker
The Smoker is an ambush class who can strangle Survivors with his long tongue, similar to Half-Life's Barnacle. The help of another Survivor is required to escape from a Smoker's hold. As the name implies, Smokers emit smoke to impair Survivors' vision and voice communication when killed. A Smoker also will frequently cough, letting the Survivors know when he is in the area. The Smoker can drag players that he has captured with his tongue towards himself, though he remains stationary and cannot move. The Smoker is also momentarily paralyzed for a few seconds after having his tongue removed from his captive by another Survivor. To bad it is not real, easlm.
The Spitter
The Spitter is a new Special Infected introduced in Left 4 Dead 2. Its primary task is to spit at the Survivors, similar to the Antlion Worker in Half-Life 2: Episode 2. The phlegm bomb it spits contains an acid that spreads upon impact. Any Survivor caught within the acid puddle will take small amounts of damage, thus prompting them to move. Its goal is to separate the Survivors when they hide in enclosed spaces and ultimately get them to keep moving away from small spaces. It is often compared to the Boomer, as it is a support type of Infected. Also, much like the Boomer, when the Spitter is killed, an acid puddle spreads from where she was killed (Although her body is not destroyed or damaged in the process).
The Tank
The Tank is the strongest of the Special Infected, and is reasonably fast; however if it is being shot but an automatic weapon, or is walking through fire, it's speed will be reduced. if any Survivors at 51% or above health are running away from the Tank, it will not be able to catch them as they can run slightly faster. Even though the Tank has incredible strength and resistance, it is also highly flammable, as with all infected, and will die within 30 seconds when set on fire. This has been patched by Valve in Versus, meaning the Tank takes damage from fire, but the timer still occurs in Co-op or single player campaigns. When controlled by a player, the Tank has a "Control Meter" that slowly runs out if the Tank has not hit the Survivors for a period of time. Unless the player is able to locate the Survivors and hit one of them, the control of the tank will slowly lessen, and once it runs out, the player will lose control of the Tank, and another player will play as them. The Tank is capable of throwing chunks of concrete it rips out of the ground to momentarily stun Survivors, and can punch items (logs, dumpsters, cars, etc.) with sufficient force to incapacitate the Survivor instantly. The Survivors are alerted of an approaching Tank by dramatic music, loud pounding and furious roars. You will know that a Tank is dangerously close when the screen starts to shake and the Tank music starts.

Scavenge Mode
Scavenge Mode is a gameplay mode announced for Left 4 Dead 2. Each game consists of the Survivors and the Infected competing against each other to achieve a goal. The Survivors' goal is to find 16 gas cans hidden throughout the map and bring them back to a generator, using the gas as fuel.
The Survivors will have 30 seconds to set up and grab their weapons, while the Infected attempt to find ambush spots. Once the round starts, the Survivors have 2 minutes to find the canisters, with an additional 20 seconds for each canister they find, before they lose. The Infected team's goal, much like any Versus match, is simple: kill the Survivors as fast as you possibly can.
It's recommended that the Survivors watch their aim while shooting at Infected to avoid accidentally setting off the gasoline into a burning inferno. At the same time, this can be used as an advantage for the Infected team, simply because the Spitter has the ability to ignite gas cans with her acidic phlegm.

Left 4 Dead 2 Weapons Guns/Melee/Grenades
Tier 1
Chrome Shotgun
The Chrome Pump Shotgun is the most basic shotgun in the game. It deals high damage at close range but the spread causes it to be ineffective at medium to long range. It was revealed in very early builds of the Left 4 Dead 2 beta and rarely seen. It is modeled after the Remington 870 Marine Magnum.
Submachine Gun
Silenced Submachine Gun
The Silenced Submachine Gun fires its rounds at a very high rate of fire. All the rounds in one magazine can be fired in 5 seconds. It has a capacity of 48 rounds per magazine. It is suspected that this is will be a Tier 1 weapon. It is modeled after the Military Armament Corporation M10 submachine gun (colloquially known as the MAC-10) with a suppressor.
Tier 2
Auto Shotgun
SPAS-12
The Auto Shotgun fires shotgun shells and has a capacity of 10 shells each reload. It is suspected that this will be a Tier 2 weapon. It is modeled after the Franchi SPAS-12 semi-automatic shotgun. Oddly, the animation from the Left 4 Dead auto shotgun plays when taking out this weapon, but nothing is being held when the player pulls the back end to extend.
Sniper Rifle
Sniper Rifle
The Sniper Rifle will do more damage against Special Infected while still killing the Common Infected in one hit. It will also be more accurate when moving and be black in color instead of the wood brown of its predecessor. It has a capacity of 30 rounds each magazine; increased from the 15 from before. It is suspected that this will be a Tier 2 weapon. It is modeled after the Heckler & Koch G3SG/1 rifle, a scoped G3 variant.
Assault Rifle
Combat Rifle
The Combat Rifle is an automatic weapon that has a capacity of 60 rounds per magazine and fires in three-round bursts. It is suspected that this will be a Tier 2 weapon. It is modeled after the Fabrique Nationale SCAR-L assault rifle.
Special Tier
Grenade Launcher
The Grenade Launcher is a weapon in Left 4 Dead 2. Based on footage from Comic Con, it appears to be a M79 Grenade Launcher. Not much is known about the grenade launcher other than "it liquefies flesh-eaters with remarkable efficiency."
AK-47
The AK-47 is an Assault Rifle in Left 4 Dead 2. It can be found mostly in the location of the SCAR in areas where the assault rifle spawns.
Other Weapons
Weapon Upgrades
Laser sight
The Laser sight will appear in Left 4 Dead 2 as a tool used to enhance the targeting on all weapons. The laser is the concept of the LLM01 Laser Sight. The laser can be attached to any weapon of choice.
An Infected in a hazmat suit that is invulnerable to fire.
The Incendiary Ammunition is a special type of ammo that can be found in Left 4 Dead 2 randomly throughout the campaigns. After picking up this type of ammo, the player will do a reload, all gun shots for tier 1 and tier 2 weapons are flammable and can set most Infected including Special Infected on fire (with some exceptions). For example, Infected in hazmat suits are invulnerable to incendiary ammo, due to their suits. It is unlikely that picking up incendiary ammo with a grenade launcher will make it incendiary, considering it kills most things in one shot.
The Explosive Ammunition is a second type of special ammo that is found in Left 4 Dead 2. This makes the bullets explosive, instantly killing the Infected and knocking down anything close enough to it.
Sidearm
Each of the Survivors starts with a pistol.
* Pistol
* Dual Pistols (Acquired when a second pistol is picked up.)
* Magnum (cannot dual wield)
* P220 Pistol (Can be dual-wielded)
Grenades
Each of the Survivors can carry either one molotov cocktail, one pipe bomb, or one bile bomb.
* Molotov cocktail
* Pipe bomb
* Bile bomb
Bile Bomb Effects
The Bile bomb is a new weapon appearing in Left 4 Dead 2. The weapon was first mentioned in the new achievement list .Not much is currently known about this weapon, except that it contains Boomer bile and based on the achievement Septic Tank, looks like the Infected summoned by the bile will attack whatever is covering it.
Once you kill one of the Hazmat Infected, they will drop one of these containers full of bile due to the fact that they were CEDA workers that were studying The Infection. There is an achievement to pick up 10 of these containers. It will most likely use the same inventory slot as the pipe bomb and the molotov.
It has been speculated that the bile bomb will have similar functions to the pipe bomb, as Boomer bile calls the horde. The bomb could do the same and the horde summoned by the Survivor will attack wherever or whatever the bomb hits, including other Infected. This is re-enforced by the achievement gained by covering a Tank in such bile, which would probably cause other Infected to attack it.
As seen in one of the newest videos featuring Hard Rain, the bile bomb is, in fact, used to call a horde of regular infected to attack special infected. It utilizes the slot as used for Pipe bomb and Molotov.
Close Combat Weapons
Close combat weapons are introduced in Left 4 Dead 2. The weapons are found at random points in the game (Any weapon can be found in any level and obtained by any Survivor), you cannot use your pistols until you drop the close combat weapon. It is speculated that on Special Infected, melee weapons will have little effect on them. The only one mentioned was the Witch. However, it is widely assumed that this applies to the Tank as well, but if you attack a Special Infected, it will do an "execution" move. These weapons can kill Common Infected in one hit, and can even kill multiple Infected in a single swing. According to Game Informer magazines the Witch can be killed with a single shot from the axe if placed in the back of her head. As seen in Dark Carnival footage at PAX, when picked up, the close combat weapon takes the place of a pistol. This means you must choose between infinite ammo in ranged pistols that do not kill as fast as a melee weapon, or a melee weapon that is not ranged but is instant kill. Melee weapons have a main function, which is the attack, and also a secondary push similar to the one that can be used with guns. Similar to using melee with guns, it can be used to push back Infected. When a Survivor is incapacitated they drop whatever melee weapon they were carrying a pull out a single pistol, allowing the Survivor a chance to help teammates while they are down.
* Axe
* Baseball Bat
* Chainsaw
* Cricket Bat
* Crowbar
* Electric Guitar
* Frying Pan
* Katana
* Machete
* Tonfa

(GoGamingGiant Interview)
We recently had the opportunity to sit down and interview Chet Faliszek, the Writer of Left 4 Dead 2. You may notice that some of these questions have already been answered, but this was because Valve was extremely busy with the $25 million marketing for the game. Thanks to the staff for helping prepare some questions.
* The Jockey was revealed at PAX and it says that you should keep moving and resist while it is on your back, what happens if you don’t?
The Jockey will steer you where he wants to take you, which will mean into fire, Spitter Goo, or off a ledge. Experienced players will learn to influence the Jockey’s control to keep you out of trouble.
* How many [more] melee weapons can we expect? There are around seven announced so far, no?
If you count the chainsaw as a melee weapon, and we do – there are 10 total. Each melee weapon has a different feel, the axe is great at taking out large number of infected surrounding you, while the crowbar is my favorite to use while hitting common infected on the run.
* Can you say anything about the two new unnanounced [now announced] campaign modes?
Dead Center is the first campaign in the game and Hard Rain, which features Director 2.0 weather effects is the fourth campaign.
* What is your opinion on the maze of cars with active alarms? Don’t you think that this almost impossible for the survivors?
I have done it myself, in Versus. So it is possible, you just really need to be on top your game.
* Seems like the predominant theme was to make the game harder, whether it be for the survivors or the infected. How much harder will it be?
We constantly have playtesters in to make sure we aren’t making the normal game too hard. We have balanced the additional elements so players comfortable in L4D1 should be comfortable in Left 4 Dead 2. For more experienced players we have also tweaked advanced and expert modes to challenge them.
* It was mentioned awhile back that the survivors can tell how much damage has been delivered to the tank, the report said that it will show signs of damage, is this still true?
We don’t have a damage model for the tank in the game. One of the scary elements of fighting a tank is you aren’t sure if this is the last bullet you need to fire or not. We wanted to keep the tension up during the battle, so the Survivors aren’t sure it is over until it is over.
* Valve has said that the new AI Director will be able to alter pathways as well as item and zombie placement, but is there anything else the AI director has up its sleeve?
Another example of the Director 2.0 changes is in Hard Rain. There the AI Director can send storms down on a Survivor team doing well. The storms cut your visibility and stir up the horde. The moment you see a lightning strike, you need to run for cover.
* Alright, you know I have to ask, can you say anything about the new multiplayer mode?
Scavenge mode challenges players to compete in round-based games of up to 8 players (Survivors vs. Infected). The Survivors must battle both the Infected and the clock as they collect gas cans to refuel a generator located in each map. Every can the Survivors pour into the generator scores their team a point and adds time to the clock.
Once time runs down, the game goes into overtime mode as long as one player is still holding a gas can. Drop the can and the round ends. Trying to run to the generator with the final can while a Jockey is hot on your tail is one of the most exciting experiences of Left 4 Dead 2.

CriticalGamer Interview
Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to question Chet Faliszek, writer on Left 4 Dead 2? Paying tribute to zombie attacks featured in the game, we bashed down his door and then proceeded to puke and spit all over the furniture. Bafflingly, he wasn’t amused.
CG = CriticalGamer
CF = Chet Falizsek from Valve
CG: Why did you decide to include melee weapons this time around? Do they differ significantly from melee attacks in the original Left 4 Dead?
CF: We wanted to give players more options. Often players will be surrounded by common infected, shooting them all can get tiresome so we needed to help these players out. And after all, whacking zombies in the head with a frying pan, bat, or katana is a staple of zombie movies.
CG: Was it difficult coming up with new enemies that fit in with the zombie theme, while not being too similar to existing monsters?
CF: We look at the new Special Infected in the context of problems we need to solve. For example we saw players who were so tight with their teamwork, even a solid Infected team had no options to counter them. The Charger was created specifically to break that group up and scatter them and allow the other specials to attack.
CG: Mobile witches are a new addition, is that you guys just deliberately trying to scare the crap out of us all for giggles?
CF: Really good players have learned to handle a Witch, but other players still struggle with the Witch, so we didn’t just want to make The Witch tougher. While she wanders around, you can wait her out, she might get out of your way. Of course, she also might move even more in your way or a smoker might come by and help you get a closer look at her.
CG: With the new special infected joining the fray in versus, we’d imagine it opens up a set of new possibilities for tactical play for infected players. Are there any particular combinations that work well?
CF: The new Special Infected are created to work well with others, so there are many options available. Puking on someone who is being jockeyed is a combo that not only helps bring down the Survivors but is always good for a laugh. Another favorite is to Smoker pull someone into a long hallway or past an open window and have the Charger take them for a ride. And the Spitter? She just loves to spit goo on a pounced survivor.
CG: The use of the global stats pages in Left 4 Dead must have provided you with unprecedented levels of detail on how people were playing the game; has anything you’ve learned through the stats affected design choices for Left 4 Dead 2?
CF: One of the biggest pieces of data we have seen is the confirmation that people love to play co-op campaigns. Once you have played L4D for a stretch, you don’t automatically move to Versus. Many players continue to play Campaign Mode where the game becomes more of a social event than a game. We have many emails and stories of husbands getting their wives to play Co-op, friends from college getting together once a week to play or the weekly work game.
CG: Why is there still no single player story mode?
CF: We didn’t want players to have to play a different mode to get the story. We always wanted you to be able to get the story in the campaign mode that you could play alone or with your friends.
CG: When expansions make an appearance, can we expect new items and game modes rather than just new maps?
CF: Right now we are working to get everything we can into the game. We will start looking at DLC and what that will be after we ship.
CG: Do you think that the AI Director could be successfully implemented into a single player game – not necessarily a Left 4 Dead one? Is this something you have considered?
CF: We have definitely thought along those lines. Replayability is just as important in single player games as it is in multiplayer games. The AI Director helps us bring that to our games so you should be looking out for variations on it in the future.
CG: Will we end up seeing Left 4 Dead 2 on the PS3? And if not, why not?
CF: Right now we think the 360 and PC offer the best community features for Left 4 Dead 2. Through Xbox Live or Steam gamers can easily connect and play, and playing with your friends is what Left 4 Dead 2 is all about.
CG: Valve are of course notorious for long breaks between sequels, with the admirable mantra ‘It’ll be released when it’s ready’. Bearing this in mind, why is the second Left 4 Dead game going to be in the shops just a year after the first?
CF: Sometimes the iterative process hits all its marks. Numerous times during the process we evaluated the game and were ready to pull the plug on this year’s release if it wasn’t ready. Internally we are very tough on our own games and were ready to hold back Left 4 Dead 2 if it wasn’t something we were proud of, but during development we just kept hitting our goals. I think that is a testament to how well the team understands the world of Left 4 Dead and how we were all of a shared vision for what Left 4 Dead 2 should be.
CG: There was the notorious threatened boycott, which was ended after you spoke to the leaders of the campaign personally. Why did you do this? Did you see the boycott as a real and serious threat to sales?
CF: It was less about the threat to sales and more about our community talking with us over what their concerns. We regularly invite people from the community or outside into our offices to discuss our games and how we are doing as a company, this visitation was just a little more public than normal.
CG: How do you plan to support L4D1 going forward? The sequel is almost sure to make the first game obsolete, and yet you’ve claimed that L4D2 wouldn’t spell the end of the original. Is the Crash Course DLC the last we’ll see or is there more planned for the original?
CF: We are working on updates for L4D1 as I type this. So we aren’t done yet.
CG: What’s your response to many people calling Crash Course a hack job? People have pointed out and/or claimed 100% reused geometry, glitches, glitched achievements with odd grammatical errors in the text, questionable level design, too short a length, and nothing to differentiate it from other modes. Can we expect marked improvement in future L4D1 add ons?
CF: On the opening night we had a server issue that caused some issues with being able to walk through objects etc, we patched it the next day. Past that Crash Course has been very well received. We wanted to experiment and focus on Versus and we are very happy with the results.
CG: Where do you see Left 4 Dead going in the future?
CF: We plan on continuing to expand the world and push forward co-op gaming

Realism Mode
Realism Mode, says Kim Swift (Left 4 Dead 2 level designer), is for advanced players only, a way to make the game more interesting for players who don’t feel challenged by the expert difficulty level.
Turning on Realism turns off the glow that normally haloes players and special infected creatures. “Communication becomes really important,” said Swift. “Players need to stick together.”
The game is designed such that getting separated from the three other survivors is life-threatening. The glow normally helps players find their way back to the group, or helps find team members who may be incapacitated. Swift said that when players need help in Realism Mode, they need to be able to accurately and clearly describe where they are in the game environment so that the other players can locate them.
Health and items “don’t glow until you are right on top of them,” said Swift, which means that while regular gameplay might involve dashing from one safe area to another, in Realism Mode searching and exploration are essential to survival.
Swift said that Realism Mode also affects damage, so chest shots on the infected are not as effective, and players need to make head shots. “Just like in the movies,” added Valve’s Yasser Malaika as his Left 4 Dead 2 character killed a zombie that was about to finish off my character.
There are five campaigns in Left 4 Dead 2, each with multiple levels, and Swift said that all of them can be played in Realism Mode. And it’s possible to scale down the difficulty to easy in Realism, for those players that want to see what it would really be like to be in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, but don’t want to be killed too quickly.
