Leo del Castillo from MS has stated the xbox one can control to the CPU/GPU power levels to reduce it's heat output.
Even alerts the player that an overheat is going to happen.

Tbh if it's overheating you'll notice and think that sounds a bit weird, lets have a break.

Fans running overtime on high must mean something, specially if this console is meant to be silent, any slight change in noise your going to assume something's up.

From my understanding it was a simple fan system.
PS3 got to a certain level it turned on the fan at max speed did you not alert you or lower the power.

actually a long time ago when i still had the fat ps3, I was playing Gta Iv and a message pop out saying that the system was overheating and that I had to turn it off and let it cool down for a few minutes , Again it was a long time ago and that was the only time that I saw it , maybe Sony took it out on a update..
