Jailbreaking is a good thing to do for ipods, and i would reccomend it for the iphone too. I wouldnt worry about the slowing down too much, i believe theres tweaks in cydia to fix that

I my self have a iPhone 3GS and i recommend jailbreaking it 100%. I have done so my self and also jailbroken my new iPhone 4. Oh and ive seen other jailbroken iPhone 3GS' and I havn't noticed and change in speed (slow/fast) , as far as I know the iPhone 3G will be slowed down by the jailbreak but the iPhone 3GS is perfect after jailbreaking so go for it :y:
