Is the hastily increasing popularity of smart phone applications going to take over as #1 in the gaming community?

Can iPhones or iPads take over the Wii, the XBox, or even the PlayStation3?

The creator of Angry Birds seems to think so.

A member of Rovio (helped create the game) spoke at a conference recently.

With the mobile games and tablet games growing, consoles are slowly "dying."

Angry Birds has been downloaded 100 million times, and the company recently announced they have raised $42 million dollars.

Here is a list of pro's and cons for the Consoles:

Pros

Cons

Played using TV's

Games cost $60

Good graphics

Hacking is common

Nearly Crystal Clean Online Connection

small but still annoying amount of lag

Lots of memory

Updates (DLC) cost money

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now here is a list of pros and cons for the Apps:

Pros

Cons

Cheap games

Small screen

Very little hacking

Okay Graphics (iPad is best with HD)

No lag (Not including online)

Not very smooth connection, weak

Updates give you more for FREE!

Not as much memory as consoles

So what do you think, do you think consoles are going down and apps will become number one? Or do you think the consoles will forever stay on top?

Smartphone games and applications are practically kiddie stuff compared to hardcore games, which will NEVER work on a smartphone. Wii is more popular due to its appeal to the average person who isn't really a gamer, same with smartphone applications. Hey look! I can play this fun castle smashing game on the road on my iphone! It's all a matter of preference. Will smartphone games take over the market? Possibly, but will consoles die as a result? Hell no.

LOL! there is NO WAY that those stupid little boring games can take over hardcore HD Multiplayer DLC filled Console games.... hmm lets see here....
Consoles = 1080p Smartphones = 240p-360p
Consoles = multiplayer smooth running online smartphones = laggy as hell if the game HAS online

most popular game on console = mw2 = 430million sales and over 2.2 billion dollars as of angry birds over 100 million sales and $42 million FAIL

on smartphone games you beat it then never play it again most of the time when it is the EXACT oposite with most console games.

You forgot to mention that smartphone games are typically casual, and so really aren't played more than every once and awhile.

The guy must be in dreamland.

I have an iPhone, a PS3, a wii and also an xbox.
But I would never trade my gaming moments to the iPhone.

It's fun for when you're away from your proper games consoles, like at work or something, but it will never replace them.

I think it could happen because I myself have been getting tired of console games and shit.

I think he is just happy that he has made $42 million on a simple game (his company actually).

It is a lot considering it only costs 59p :p But I don't think phone games could replace console games. Another pro for console gaming is the plot and variety in that plot is usually a lot greater Smile Even though now Black Ops is boring :/
