yes you can and you can even update to 4.3.1 and jailbreak

they work ALL iDevice that support that firmware (except iPad 2)

sorry i forgot that iPhone 2G doesnt support 4.3.1 but there's a JB for 4.0 there aswell

if you want to JB 4.0 use jailbreakme.com , is the best for it !
