iOS5, the latest major update in Apple's iOS series, was released to developers only a short while ago. (Not a developer? Not a problem

)
This is, of course, the earliest of early versions, and is considerably unstable. So, should you take the risk and install iOS 5 on your device?
Short Answer: If you rely heavily on your device (such as if you have an iPhone, which you use for communication), or if you don't actually own the device, don't install it. Sorry, but that's really the best option for you
Don't give a damn about the previous warning? Then read on

[multipage=Why You Should Update]Well, you may have heard about some of the new features that iOS 5 sports, such as Twitter integration, a Notification Center, and a Newsstand. Instead of listing all of the 200+ new features, I think it'd be better for both of us if I just forward you to Apple's site:

They can probably explain it better than I can. =D
One bonus that Apple does not mention is that, if you have friends who are... how to put this delicately... complete nerds, having iOS5 is an excellent way to show off

[multipage=Why Not to Get iOS 5 ]It seems like there's some good features here, right? Is it worth it though?
Well, if you can legitimately get iOS5 (you have a paid developer account) then your only issue is the large number of bugs.
If you don't have one of these accounts and still install iOS 5 (I'll tell you how in a second), then you also need to worry about reactivating your iPod (or bypassing it, at least) every time your iPod turns on. Which, as it may reboot often because of the bugs, seems to happen a lot.
Another problem with the unactivated devices is that you can't use them with iTunes, meaning you won't be able to sync your music, photos, etc. Of course, you can still buy music from the iPod or transfer pictures via email, but if you're a person who tends to get free music from the internet

pirate

you won't be able to get your music until a fix is available.
There's also no jailbreak available to the public yet for iOS 5 (although MuscleNerd has jailbroken it, so you may be able to expect one soon!)
Really, if you don't mind your device being out of commission every once and awhile, then you should update. But if else, I'd stay with iOS 4 for now
[multipage=How do Install iOS 5 (Free!) ]Yep, there is no need to pay for a $99 developer account to obtain the new copy of iOS5.
Just follow these easy steps to get iOS 5 on your device:

3) Open up your device in iTunes, hold down Shift (Windows) or Alt (Mac) and click "Restore" (note: "Update" may also work, but I'd defiantly recommend a complete restore for this. You may want to back up first!)
4) A file box should appear. Browse to the copy of iOS 5 that you downloaded and select it.
5) Let it update!
6) Once the device has started up for the first time, unplug it from iTunes. You don't want to use iTunes from this point onwards, as it will try to activate your device and run into problems.
When you first turn on your device, it will want to be activated. Read the next pages to find out what to do to bypass the activation.[multipage=Bypass Activation (New, Easy Way!) ]There are a couple different methods out there to bypass the Activation, but I think I have one that works perfectly on all devices (except the Apple TV; if you have that, you're on your own). Just follow these steps, and you'll be fine.
1) At the main screen (when you first turn your iPhone on), press the home button three times to start Voice Over.
2) Once Voice Over is on, turn your device off, and then back on.
3) When it's almost done turning on, you should hear it say something such as "Voice Over Activated". Get Ready!
4) When the Apple logo changes (it has a sort of animation now) begin swiping with three fingers from the top of the screen down. You don't need to go all the way down, just about half way.
5) When the device starts and is at the main screen, the new "Notifications Center" should open up. When it does, you'll see a line about stocks and one about weather. On the right-hand-side of these lines, you'll see "Yahoo!" symbols. Click on one of them a couple times (I believe you need to click twice while you have voice over on) and it will launch Safari or the Weather App. When it does, just hit the home button, and you'll be at the main screen. You've bypassed the activation
6) Turn Voice Over off, because you'll go insane if you don't.[multipage=F.A.Q. and Troubleshooting ]
