iOS 5 Supports OTA Update On A 3G Connection

iOS 5 brings OTA (over the air) updates to iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. Until now, everyone thought that OTA updates would only available over WiFi – well, after some digging in Apple’s SDK, some strings of code have been discovered that lead us to believe otherwise:

Unfortunately, the SDK also reveals that 3G OTA updates are contingent upon the size of the update and if its too big, it will force you to download it over WiFi. Perhaps the option to update over 3G is meant for smaller updates such as 5.1.1 and not bigger updates (like 5.1, 5.2 or 6.0):

This update requires a Wi-Fi network connection to download.

Keep in mind that this could change at any point in time after all, iOS 5 hasn’t even been officially released yet and thus, OTA updates aren’t supported.
