Post: iphone 3g on 3.1.2. Want to go to 4.0.1 is it safe?

Yeah I am a noob but am trying to learn. I only got an iphone 3g off a mate 1 week ago but have managed to jailbreak it, unlock it, and get cydia and installous happeneing.
Currently FW 3.1.2(7D11)
baseband is 05.11.07
Jailbroken with redsn0w
unlocked with ultrasn0w
Small issue I have found is that there are a few apps that want ios 4 and above to run so I thought about maybe upgrading the FW.
What I was to know is do I have to upgrade it to the ios 4 firmware through itunes first before I can jailbreak and unlock?
I downloaded IOS 4.0.1 as this seems to be the one that most of the apps I want are asking for and when I go to do a restore iTunes tells me it is going to verify it first so I bailed.
I read that apple have stopped signing firmware so dont know if this means that itunes will only allow the latest firmware via a restore?
My question is what is the best way to get to ios 4.0.1 and have it jailbroken and unlocked (currently locked to another provider).
I hear that redsn0w updates your baseband which is not desireable
Sn0wbreeze doesnt but in both cases I dont think I can just put a 4.0.1 FW straight over 3.1.2 FW without updating to 4.0.1 via itunes first)
Also, if I dont like the ios4 can I downgrade it back to 3.1.2? (as I hear some 3G phones becomes slow to a point where people feel they cant use it)

Thanks mate, I also need to unlock as well, so, just update via itunes to 4.2.1 and then jailbreak with greenpois0n rc6.1 and unlock with Ultrasn0w?

THhanks for your help, just went onto 4.2.1 with Sn0wbreeze and apparently it preserved my baseband. Ill see how it all goes

You just have to update to 4.0.1 jailbreak it with You must login or register to view this content. (just put that link into the safari of your iDevice and slide the unlock and wait for it done
) then unlock it with ultrasn0w and done ★
