Notifications

For a long time Apple has been ridiculed over the way it has delivered notifications to its users well with iOS 5 they seem to have finally got it right.

Apple have now introduced ‘Notification Centre’. This is where you can pull down from the status bar in any app to see a list of your notifications (can I hear Android anybody).

New notifications now show also show at the top of the screen making the status bar double height and then disappearing again, not effecting what you are doing at all.
You must login or register to view this content.

On the Lockscreen notifications are displayed in one panel, where you can slide the notification and launch the app straight away.

I have to say Apple look like they have finally got this part of iOS right. The ‘Notification Centre’ even shows your weather and stock feeds at the top.

iMessage

For all you people out there that wish you had BBM, well Apple has listened to you. Apple is launching iMessages. iMessages is an iDevice to iDevice messaging service. It allows you to start messaging from one device and pick up right where you left off on another. iMessages allows you to send pics, video contact and locations

Camera

Finally Apple have done something with the Camera app. Finally after a long time of Jailbreaker Devs allowing us to use the volume keys to control the shutter, Apple have thought that would also be a good idea.

Also in the camera app Apple have giving us gridlines, pinch to zoom, single tap to focus and exposure locks. We also now have to ability to launch the camera app straight from the lock screen by double clicking the home button then selecting the icon that appears.

Pictures

Pictures app along with the camera app has seen a big update.

The picture app now has the ability to crop, rotate and enhance your pics. It will allow you to remove red eye and a big one, allow you to organise your pics into albums right on your device.

Safari

Apple has made some changes to safari to make it a lot better for the users also. They have now given us tabbed pages on the iPad so that we can flick through web pages quicker. On other iDevices we get reader so that it removes all the stuff that we don’t need from it, making reading your favourite pages a lot easier. Reader lists will also let you save articles so that you can come back and read them later.

Reminders

For all of you that love to make lists, Apple brings you reminder. Reminder allows you to make lists but also gives you the option to set Geo-Fences for the reminders also. This means that when you either leave or enter a certain location the reminder will pop up.

News Stand

For you magazine and newspaper loving people that like to subscribe to your digital content Apple brings you News Stand. News Stand is like iBooks, managing all your subscriptions and making sure you always have the latest versions of your newspapers and magazines.

PC Free

Since iDevices were about they always needed you to have a PC or Mac well not no more. iDevices can be used in their own right now no longer needing to be set up or activation from main computer.

Along with PC Free Apple have finally bought WiFi syncing to the table, allowing you to sync your device wirelessly. As soon as you plug your device into a charging point and your iTunes is open your device will sync.

Twitter

Yes after all the rumours Twitter got an in depth mark in iOS 5, you are now able to tweet from the Pictures, Safari, Youtube and Maps apps. Just on sign in and then you can tweet as much as you like

Other Features

Other things have been added to iOS 5, such as Emoji for everybody, separate Video and iPod apps the ability to add dictionary short cuts (so OMG would change to Oh My God).

The iPad has new keyboard layouts also, it is now able to split so you have a space to rest you thumbs. Game Centre allows you to add a profile pic and also allows you to purchase apps right from inside the app.

New things to the iPad also include the ability to wireless mirror the iPad 2 using an Apple TV and multitasking gestures are now right in the iPads OS.

The Mail and Calendar apps also got a lookin when they dished out iOS 5 features. You can now add calendars right on your devices and Mail allows you to edit the text by using rich text editing tools.

iOS 5 also bought over the air updates. So if Apple update the firmware your device will auto update also. But don’t worry it will not download the whole of the new firmware it will only download the new parts. Apple is calling this Delta Updates, these can be turned on and off in the settings menu.

So all in all the iOS 5 is a great update for your iDevice.

iOS will be available in the Fall (August / September time) and will be available for the iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 and 3GS, and the 3rd and 4th Gen iPod touches.
