Note

This does not require jailbreak, I will post one thing that do require jailbreak, but it's an extra thing, you will see when you come to that part of this tutorial. I'm from Sweden and I'm writing this because of bad weather atm, so the spelling and the grammar might be horrible, but I will try my best!

Requirements

A Computer which is connected to the ethernet.
An iDevice which is connected to WiFi [if jailbroken it works on 3G but it's not recommended, I will get to that, later.]
A iTunes account

Do you have all this? Great!

What are we going to do? I'm scared:scared:

We are going to download 2 apps, one app that lets you controll your own computer via your iDevice [Teamviewer]. The other one will allow you to stream media from your computer to your iDevice [VLC streamer].

Setting up teamviewer

Step 1: Download teamviewer for your computer

You must login or register to view this content.|You must login or register to view this content.|You must login or register to view this content.

Step 2: Install teamviewer

This is easy, just follow the instructions on the screen.

Step 3: Create an account

Start up teamviewer, there will pop up 2 windows, one of them have your ID and your session password, the other window is for your teamviewer account. We will use the second window. In the left corner it says "Sign up", hit that and sign up, do it with a legit email, username and password. After you have signed up, log in.

Step 4: Configure your iDevice

Go grab your iDevice, start up the appstore and search for "teamviewer". You will se 2 different apps, one costs around 80 bucks and the other one is free, there's no differens between the both, exept one, the free one is for personal use and the other one is for commercial use, we will use the free one. Download it and start it up. At the bottom you have 4 alternatives, take the third one, should be something with "partner", when you get there, log in to your teamviewer account.
You should now see your other computers, if one of them are online you can connect to them with one click, the first time you need to set a mutual password between your computer and your iDevice.

Note

Teamviewer requires WiFi on your iDevice, you can fix this so you can use it on 3G with the cydia tweak "My3G". This app costs 3.99$, you can get this tweak for free, but I think it's unfair to the developer of the app, so you will have to find this for your self, if you find it, please DON'T post it in this thread. When this app is installed you can use things that requires WiFi, for example Facetime, on 3G.

Setting up VLC streamer

Grab your iDevice and open the App store. Search for VLC streamer, you will get 2 different options, once again we are going to use the free one for exact the same reasons as with Teamviewer. Install it, then head to your computer.

On your computer

Download and install the helper

This was the first step from their webpage, here's the next 3 steps

2) Run the Helper
The setup Helper will install itself.

If you use the default firewall on your system, then the helper will configure that correctly.

If you use your own firewall application, then you'll need to make sure it allows VLC Streamer to communicate through the firewall

3) That's It!
By now, you should be able to see your computer in the VLC Streamer app on your iPhone/iPad/iPod'.

Tap on the computer and enjoy!

If you don't see your computer immediately, you can tap on the rescan button (bottom left of the screen) to re-scan the network

4) ...Not there yet?
Don't worry if things don't work out immediately.

Most times that folks have had problems with VLC Streamer, the problem is a firewall blocking communication between VLC Streamer and the PC/Mac.

Click on the "Connection Help" button in the VLC Streamer helper for help in getting the connection to work.

If that doesn't help, then please let me know exactly what you have tried, and exactly what you see in each of the tests.

You should now have these two configured, now I'm going to tell you what you can do with these two, and why you need both of them.

VLC streamer allows you to watch any movie on your computer on your iDevice, the first time you watch a movie you might have to wait a minute to let it buffer, but after that you can watch it when you want without needing to wait for it to buffer.

Teamviewer allows you to control your computer and there for lets you download new movies, tv-shows and music that you can stream to your iDevice. I love How I met your mother, but in Sweden they come out almost a year later then in the US, so since this christmas I have been downloading them every thuseday morning, streamed them to my iPhone and then sacrifiesed some of my ethernet on my dataplan to watch it on the bus to school.

So, now you can control your computer with your iDevice and watch all the film you want, right on it, since it streams it takes up verry litle storage on your iDevice.

Hope you liked my thread, it took about 2 hours to write, simply because english isn't my first language. I had to hurry up in the end because I have to cook some food, it's getting late here.
