then why is my ipad 2 bricked?
Your iPad is probably bricked because you did something dumb while updating. I have updated both my iPhone 4's, my iPod touch 3g, 4g and 2g, my iPad 2 and my iPhone 3Gs and none have bricked.
i update to iOS 5 while i was running a jailbroken 4.3.3 untethered jailbreak on my iPod Touch 4G, It worked Flawlessly and i believe that you have to have iTunes 10.5 to update to iOS 5
