1) are you jailbroken? if so loading too many memory consuming mods will drain your battery (obviously)
2) Try turnin wifi off when your not using it
3) Remember to delete apps from your backgrounding bar whenever possible to free up memory and stop the battery being wasted.
4) Are you just leaving it in standbye in your pocket or are you actually using it? if so what are you doing?

You really didnt give us much information to help you, unless you where going for just a general discussion :p
Either way its an iPhone, they're shit hardware wise, but good software wise, ive had a 3G,3Gs and a 4. ive come to live with it for the advantages of its software, but once andriod catches up and fixes its lag issues ill be changing right away :y:
But thats just my opinion Winky Winky

My iPhone 4S battery life sucks too, even when I'm not running apps in the background it loses battery life really fast. And I don't think there's a jailbreak out yet :/

Mine also goes down! It goes down so fast, my iPhone 3G has better battery (Not trying to copy you) and it's even jailbroken. I'm pretty sure it's a problem in iOS 5.0.1 if you are on that update. If not, try what Jono said:

I delete the apps from my background it actually does help a lot. And Jono asked a good question, do you leave it on standby or are you actually using it?
