If you're already tethered on 5.1.1
This is even more simple than the other way so if you have already tethered your iDevice this will save you lot of time and you won't have to restore and all that
To untethered your iDevice you just need to enter Cydia and download something called Rocky Racoon 5.1.1
Step 1: Open Cydia.
Step 2: Search for Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether and install.
Step 3: Reboot your device and verify that you can reboot without having to perform a tethered boot.
You need to restore via iTunes but you can do a backup on iCloud go restore and put everything back from iCloud. But if your music is downloaded from Cydia or downloaded via a Cydia tweak then you will loss it. But you're untethered on 5.0.1 that's how I'm right no there's really no way to update.
ye suppose i might not, my mate is running a 5.1 tethered JB, does he need to fully restore before updating?

Yes he can make a backup on iCloud for photos and all that stuff, for Cydia things he need to download something called AptBackup make a backup. After all that he can upgrade to 5.1.1, jailbreak and download AptBackup again and recover everything.

It's a tutorial on how to jailbreak (mod) an iDevice. Next time if you have an issue on why your thread was moved/closed, please PM me.
Done a back up and all. Jailbreaking was fine, Cydia loaded up then it closes then I lose most of my stuff on my home screen. I don't have any icons on the dock :/

So I could just tether my device and then do the Cydia things to make it a whole lot easier?
