iPhone 5 Nano SIM Tray Leaks Lead To More Confirmation

Some photos (via nowhereelse.fr) have come up that suggest that the new iPhone 5 is going to have a smaller SIM jacket in order to make their devices smaller and more streamlined. The photos of the new SIM tray show that it occupies 40% less space as compared with current micro SIM cards, and so you can call this a nano-SIM card. The rumors of Apple using a smaller SIM design surfaced around March, when it was reported that Apple was offering to license a new, compact SIM card technology to rival mobile devices at no cost if they agreed to make the new format as the industry standard.

It’s sized around a third smaller than the existing microSIM cards that you find inside your iPads and iPhones. However, the nano-SIM design was thinner as well, but Nokia strongly objected to that and so the thickness was kept the same.

Nokia argued that the design violated a “no jamming” rule since it length was too similar to the width of the current generation micro SIMs. Hence Apple responded to this by putting in some plastic around the edges of the electrical contacts so that the card could not be forced in if it was being put the wrong way in.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute in June then selected Apple’s revised design as the official fourth form factor of the SIM card standard. Since then, European wireless operators have been stockpiling the new nano-SIMs ahead of Apple’s launch of the iPhone 5, which is expected to be unveiled on the 12th of September.
