iMessage is an alright app to use. Only thing is I'm pretty sure you can't do group messages :/

Texting, iMessage, kik, Skype and whatsapp. That's the main ones I'd say.

Whatsapp and Viber are pretty decent. If you aren't an Apple fag, you can use Facebook Messenger for Android without a Facebook account! (Even though you probably have one :p)

Just use Skype that's your best bet. Or some sort of instant messaging. Even texting for that matter in which there are plenty of apps in the app store for that.

The best one is "TextNow + Voice" if your friend doesn't have text messages on his/her phone use something like Skype, WhatsApp or AIM.
