Post: Installous shuts down, small victory for developers against iPhone app piracy

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Hackulous, developer behind the popular iPhone app pirating tool Installous, closed its doors today. Operation of the Cydia repository and website has completely ceased, with both being completely unavailable.

Hackulous offered a number of tools for users sporting jailbroken iDevices to download and use paid applications from the iTunes App Store, completely free. Installous allowed users to find, download and install cracked applications. It was built to support the philosophy of “try before you buy,” however many people simply used it to pirate apps.

The aforementioned closure was attributed to the stagnation of the community forums, despite the notoriety of Hackulous amongst the Apple hacking scene.

The following statement now forms the entire You must login or register to view this content.:

Goodnight, sweet prince.

We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down. After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well-moderated, despite the devotion of our staff. We're incredibly thankful for the support we've had over the years and hope that new, greater communities blossom out of our absence.

With lots of love,
Hackulous Team

The shut down was a small victory for app developers. However, less known alternatives are already beginning to appear in other hacking communities.

The Cydia repository has been permanently shut down. Users will be greeted with the “Installous will now terminate” message upon launching it. The Hackulous website and forums are no longer available.

The sense of victory for app developers may be short lived, as other hackers are likely to pick up where Hackulous left off, in the immediate future.
