Apple plans to issue a software update to help its products avoid falling victim to booby-trapped chargers.
An update has been prepared by Apple to clamp down on the latest form of malicious chargers that have the ability to upload code to the device whilst charging it. Research into these latest form of 'attacks' has shown that it takes a mere 60 seconds for your iDevice to become infected with malicious code.
Apple's pending update stresses to it's customers to be sure of their charging device. They would recommend that everyone use's the original stock charger that came with your iDevice. If for some reason that isn't available or broken, the only replacement should come straight from an Apple Store or a trusted distributor of Apple.
The custom built chargers include a small computer alongside the electronic components that pipe power into an Apple iOS device. The tiny computer interrogates an iPhone or tablet and copies a unique ID number that identifies that phone. This then leads to an exploit on the Apple website, it takes advantage of an upload tool usually limited to Developers to test their software on an iOS Gadget.
Instead of uploading a program in development, the trio of researchers, Billy Lau, Yeongjin Jang, and Chengyu Song, managed to upload an application that stole data. The malicious chargers and their associated data-stealing application were demonstrated at the Black Hat hacker conference currently under way in Las Vegas.
That's crazy. Wouldn't you all agree? Imagine just buying a charger that leads to your iDevice being hacked? Technology is certainly advancing, however is it for the better or worse? Comment below with what you think
