However, every time I turn off my PS3 and come back online, I get a message saying something like the rank data is corrupted and reverted back to the backup data of lv 5 (which is the shotgun rank). At this point, my assumption is that I simply cannot change the rank by simply changing the rank, but also need to adjust other data as well, which I figured is doable on GSC. Is there a way in GSC to change the rank and make it stick? Preferably if there is a function that does this, that would be great.

As a side note, it seems to be that it is easy promoting the rank (going from a one bone to a shotgun) and make it stick, but it seems to be impossible to demote yourself (going from shotgun to a one bone).

Cant demote. Game prevents lower ranking. Only negative stat is downs, which will never exceed a huge value of rounds completed.
