Rank 5 (Shotguns) is the highest. How do I know? Well if you do the duplication glitch the server can return an error saying rank data corrupted, you have been reset to a previously saved rank: (1-5).

2-Crossbone
3-Skull
4-Knife
5-Shotguns

The tallies are just mere markings to show consistency (days and/or good games). Not playing for days or having bad games makes you lose tallies.

And to be on topic, I'm Rank 4 (Knife) and I'm very happy with it. I don't like the idea of getting deranked in zombies, should've been more like multiplayer where you reach max rank and you stay there. And the fact that it should be easy like playing a lot gets you rank 5 and not some unknown (high round, kill/downs, etc.).
