Mario!
1). Navigate to Network in the settings.
2). Uncheck the box
3). Load Black Ops 3
4). Go to Multiplayer and start the game.
5). Navigate back to Network and check the box
6). Join a friends session.
7). Do as usual and press setup game quickly
After that you do not need to do anything on the controllers, (you don't need to press 'X' on both controllers as you don't get an error message, it should just stick and then it should automatically start connecting you to the online services
This is very hard to do even I can't do it all the time perfect but at least it works!

post a vid as from my point of reading this
1). Navigate to Network in the settings. --- disconnect internet
2). Uncheck the box
3). Load Black Ops 3 ----- this now loads local only
4). Go to Multiplayer and start the game.
5). Navigate back to Network and check the box ------ reconnects internet
6). Join a friends session. ------- fucking impossible as you cant connect to a friend from local connection
