NAT type doesn't really affect bullet registration or hit detection. It only affects who you can play with. I can see that you get stuck with people FAR away from your location.
DMZ: You can DMZ your PS3's IP from your Modem/Router's settings. Your Router/Modem IP is usually 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.254. Your username should be admin and your password is usually admin or password. After you log on, you should go to WAN setup, or something along those lines. When you find something that asks you for the default DMZ server, enter your PS3's IP. You can find your PS3's IP from the Status list in the network settings on your PS3.
Port Forwarding: NAT type is usually closed due to ports not being open or forwarded. These ports being closed won't allow for data to be transferred. When you log onto your Modem page/ Router page, go to services and forward these ports: TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480, 5223, 8080 and UDP: 3478, 3479.
UPnP: Go to advanced settings and enabled it.
*Note: If you have a modem settings page and a router settings page, it creates a double NAT. To fix this, you need to bridge either your router or modem.
Hope this helps!
